While the traditional preparation of kava root for drinking involves massaging the ground dried root in a fine mesh bag, submerged in water for 30 minutes to an hour, our electuaries can be prepared by simply stirring a spoonful of the mixture straight out of the jar into hot water or milk. An electuary is a blend of honey and powdered herbs, which together creates a thick paste that can be added directly to water. We love this easy, approachable alternative to experiencing kava and incorporating it into our daily routines!
In order to experience the felt effects of kava in the body, it is necessary to ingest the very fine root powder that we sift and blend into our electuaries. Because the powder is not water soluble, it does tend to settle at the bottom of your mug while drinking. So please, swirl your drink before sipping! If you're sipping and savoring your kava beverage, you'll become accustomed to swirling as you got to reincorporate the fine powder as you drink.
Kava on its own is a bitter, earthy flavor. Our electuary blends also enhance the natural flavor of kava, bringing out the best of its flavor. The herbal additions to each flavor creates the final drinking experience, which is rich, inviting, and delicious.
There may be a few bits of slightly larger kava root pieces, or bits of the other fruit and herb powders that don't dissolve in water at the bottom of your mug. This is totally normal, but if you prefer, you can pour your kava beverage through a fine mesh strainer before enjoying to get the smoothest concoction.
It can make you feel sleepy (in a good way) if you drink large amounts (or certain strains), but it is not sedative. It can impart feelings of joy, giddiness, openness, and a calm brightness that can border on euphoric.
In our experience using kava in our women's circles, we find that drinking it supports an open, engaged disposition, which allows us to go deeper, be more vulnerable, and more empathetic.
Important to know: Kava will make your tongue and mouth feel tingly and numb while drinking. This is normal! In fact, it is one of the ways to know your kava is potent! The sensation, while strange at first, is not harmful and will dissipate.
